Durchlaufen: Lecküchner’s Anti-Grappling

"If they run in – run through (them)"

In my workshop we will look into Lecküchner’s “Durchlaufen”(running through). We are going to work on techniques designed as methods of counter-grappling, which will cover some arm-breaks, joint-locks and takedowns. If time allows we might even take a closer look at the (in)famous backgammon lock.

Lecture & Handling Session of Original Messers:

Research of single- edged arms in light of HEMA

James Elmslie’s talk will explore the subject of the study of the messer in archaeology and art, and how HEMA allows further insight into the subject of research into the development and use of these weapons over time. Attendees will have an exclusive opportunity to handle several archaeological examples of 15th and 16th century messers and bauernwehr from his private collection, as well as a Q&A session.

LECTURE: THE RIVETING STORY OF SIDEARMS IN ITALY AND CENTRAL & EASTERN EUROPE

Adam and Airton of Landsknecht Emporium, the top manufacturer of Messers will deliver a lecture on their research of Messers. During the lecture, they will demonstrate trends and look into hypothetical cross- influences with different, but in some ways similar sidearms.

They will look into Messer and their regional varieties, tessaks, Bauernwehren, transitional Katzbalgers, Cinquedeas and Baselards.

Messer and Buckler

In this lesson we will be exploring the six sword and buckler plays of Andre Liegnitzer, drawing heavily on our knowledge of single-handed swordplay (a.k.a the messer) from Johannes Leckuchner to make them extra awesome.

For this class fencing masks and light gloves are recommended (good luck getting your hand into a buckler if you’ve only got SPES heavies), however I’m happy for people to train with control if they don’t have these.

Groin protection is also highly recommended!

If you have a buckler (or any spare ones you are happy to lend out) please bring them. There will be a few as club kit but we can’t guarantee that we have enough for everyone.

LECKUCHNER'S PRINCIPLES- TECHNIQUES- PLAYS

In Caspers workshop we will examine the different forms of knowledge presented in Lecküchner’s work, to gain better insight into understanding his teachings and use them to structure our own lessons. The workshop will focus on one or two principles, followed by a single technique and several plays using both the principles and the technique. Using this method you will gain the necessary tools to make your own lessons based on Lecküchner’s works.

For the workshop you need no prior experience in Messer fencing; however, knowledge of the Liechtenauer system or Lecküchner’s work is a pre. Gear requirements are a nylon or steel Messer, mask, groin protection, and light gloves.
